IDENTIFYING A MIGRATION CORRIDOR: THE SCIENCE AND PATH TO DESIGNATION

Wyoming is home to important migrations, including one of the longest pronghorn migrations in the continental United States. Each fall the Sublette antelope herd migrates south from summer ranges in the foothills of the Wyoming Range, Bondurant and Jackson Hole areas to lover elevation winter ranges near Pinedale, Green River and Rock Springs – in some areas up to 165 miles, across several counties.

According to an exhaustive Biological Risk and Opportunity Assessment from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, the Sublette Pronghorn herd’s migration corridor is at risk. From residential subdivisions, to energy development, to road and fence impacts, migrating pronghorn face ever-increasing barriers on their journey. Thankfully, the agency is midway through the process of formally designating the corridor, which would help address obstacles and better protect pronghorn.

If we want to see corridor designation move forward for Sublette Pronghorn, this is our chance to show overwhelming public support for the process and WGFD’s Biological Risk and Opportunity Assessment. Although the designation process is far from over, this is the last meaningful opportunity to provide public comment and sway decision-makers — don’t miss your opportunity to weigh in!

The deadline to submit comments is 5 p.m. May 2.

Written comments will be presented to the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission before the July 2025 meeting. Comments can be submitted through the online form above or by mail to the Pinedale Regional Game and Fish Office, PO Box 850, Pinedale, WY 82941.

After considering the identified corridor, the biological risk assessment and public comment, the Game and Fish Commission will vote on whether to recommend to Governor Mark Gordon that the identified corridor be formally designated at its July 2025 meeting in Evanston.

The Sublette herd is among the largest pronghorn populations on Earth and undertakes one of the longest remaining terrestrial migrations in existence. The herd’s migration corridor is unique in the lower 48 states and part of our heritage — Wyoming has a responsibility to sustain it into the future.
