The Wyoming Legislature convenes on Feb 9 to begin consideration of the next 2-year budget proposals.
Governor Gordon’s Proposal: An $11.1 billion starting point for the biennial budget. Per the US Census Bureau, Wyoming’s combined state and local direct general expenditures were $9.7 billion in FY 2022 (the most recent year census data were available).
Lawmakers are making significant changes, proposing cuts to university funding, to Wyoming Public Media, wage increases for some state employees, and increased funding for others (troopers, snowplow drivers). Discussions center on cutting spending in some areas to manage growth versus fears of “gutting” essential services, even though Wyoming has a budget surplus. The Urban Institute has useful background information on Wyoming’s previous budget expenditures, showing that most of our spending goes to health, hospitals, and education.
